Humphrey Marshall was born in Orlean, Fauquier, Virginia. He became a surveyor and served with the Virginia forces in the American Revolution. He moved in 1782 and studied law and was admitted to the bar. He was a delegate to the convention that considered the separation of Kentucky and Virginia in 1787. He was a member of the the Virginia ratifying convention. He served as a Federalist to the United States Senate serving from 4 Mar 1795 to 3 Mar 1801.
