Dr. James E. Bumgarner died Sept. 21, 2002 after a long illness. He was 82. Dr. Bumgarner was born in Odessa, MO to Willie Emison and Venita Lorena Whitsitt Bumgarner. Dr. Bumgarner graduated from Odessa High School in 1938 before receivin medical training at the University of Misouri-Columbia and Northwestern University in Illinois. He then served 2 years as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. Following his military service, Dr. Bumgarner set up a general medicine practice in Higginsville, MO. Later he obtained training in urology at the University of Kansas Medical Center and became a Fellow of the American Urology Association. In 1955 he moved to Columbia to start a private urology practice. He served on staff at the former Boone County Hospital, Columbia Regional Hospital and the former University of Missouri Medical Center until his retirement in 1985. After retirement, Dr. Bumgarner pursued his lifelong interest in woodworking. Dr. Bumgarner is survived by his second wife, Gay McDonnell Bumgarner; three children, Sally (Mack) Townsend of Centralia, MO, Cathy (Tom) Shryock of Columbia, James B. (Linda) Bumgarner of Atlanta, GA; three stepchildren, Stephen McDonnell of San Bernardino, CA, Patrick McDonnell of San Francisco, CA and Sharon McDonnell of Burlington, VT; three sisters, Billie Jean Bumgarner (Curt) Vogel of Perryville, MO, Rose Kathryn Bumgarner (Carl) Rau of Fort Worth, TX, Margaret Ann Bumgarner (George) McArthur of College Station, TX; one brother Roger W. (Mary) Bumgarner of Columbia; 19 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His first wife, Marjory Littleton Bumgarner and one son, Dr. Steven Bumgarner preceded him in death. Services will be held at 3pm Wednesday at Memorial Park Chapel, 1217 Business Loop 70 West, Columbia, MO. Memorials may be sent to the McDonnell-Bumgarner Scholarship Fund for students at Columbia College.
