Rose, like her sister Lena, never married. When her younger half brother Arch married in 1916, Rose was invited along on a road trip Arch and his wife Clara made to Colorado. Also like Lena, Rose helped to deliver and raise her younger half brother Archie's 5 children.
She was known to her nieces and nephews as "Aunt Rose". Rose was intelligent, had nursing knowledge, and served as a midwife for many years. Rose was described by one of her nieces in 2012 as hardworking, but somewhat haughty and cool, as if the disastrous conditions of the 1930's Depression disgusted and depressed her. Perhaps she simply grew weary of years of working on behalf of the families of others, without a family of her own.
No one knows why Rose's sister Lena decided to move to Los Angeles alone in the early 1930's at the age of 56. Lena never returned to live in Illinois, and died in Los Angeles. One might imagine that the two sisters wrote to one another, or perhaps even visited each other, but no one knows for sure.
Sisters Rose, Ella, and Lena all died the same year, 1966, and all were in their early 90's. Rose lived out her entire life in Chillicothe, Illinois. She is buried there in the Chillicothe Cemetery, with just a small, simple marker marking her gravesite.
On platmaps of the Chillicothe area, Rose's name appears as the owner of record on a piece of the original farm of her father John Boylan, her name still there all the way through the 1950's. By the time of her death in 1966 at age 93, this land traced back over 125 years, part of the 1840 purchase made by her grandparents Patrick and Mary Branigan Boylan. At present in 2012, it is unknown who Rose bequeathed her land to, but it is assumed that she passed it down to the children of her sister Ella, as Ella's property was immediately adjacent to Rose's.
