HUNTER FAMILY
Rev. J. M. Hunter, Spring 1912, Oakland, Mississippi
According to our best information and most reliable, about the year 1759
a widow Hunter, whose first name has been lost, emigrated from the north
Ireland with five sons, landed at Charleston, South Carolina, and came to
Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. It is not known that they all came
together, but a certain fact is that some had families children that were
born in Ireland. The widow's sons were named James, John, Thomas,
Humphrey, and Henry.
John bought land in Mecklenburg County and lived and died there, as did
also James, who was weak constitution and died early and did not leave a
numerous posterity. Thomas first settled in Iredell County, North
Carolina, but afterwards moved to Blount County, Tennessee and the
whereabouts his descendants is not known. Humphrey served in the
Revolutionary War and had quite a checkered experience. He afterwards
studied for the ministry and made quite a reputation it. Henry seems to
have the most numerous posterity any the brothers, whose history has been
compiled by Rev. W.H. [really, William MAY] Hunter Little Rock, Arkansas,
to whom we are indebted for much the information about our ancestors.
It appears that John Hunter had a small family, possibly but two sons,
and the authority given says that one died early without any children. It
is known that the father Robert Hunter, the principal subject this
sketch, was John Hunter, as the writer once saw an old deed signed by him
before he left Ireland; also that Robert had but one brother, who died
without posterity, making Robert the forefather all the Hunter family
which settled in Middle Tennessee.
This Robert Hunter, whose birth, marriage, and death were recently found
recorded in his old family Bible, now in the hands the widow Prof. T.H.M.
Hunter Paris, Tennessee, was evidently about ten years old when he left
Ireland with his father John Hunter, and his grandmother, the widow
referred to. After having grown up and married in Mecklenburg County,
North Carolina, in fact after the birth all his children, he came to
Tennessee about the year 1805 and first stopped at Black Fox Camp, about
where the town Mufreesboro is now located. He then moved to what is now
Marshall County and located on Rock Creek in the year 1810 and erected
the first buildings on the old homestead, which still stand. [The
building burned down about 1940.]
At the time the writer's Father, Elihu W. Hunter, was a boy ten years
age. Being the youngest son and next to youngest child, he was with his
father and one old slave, Tom, [when they] subdued the wilderness while
the older children went out to make a home for themselves. For the same
reason he, Elihu W. Hunter, was denied advantage school and obtained what
knowledge books he could by studying at night when he had come in from
the hard labor the day, and during wet weather. This was under the
tutelage the father, Robert Hunter, himself a retired schoolteacher no
mean reputation, as was evidenced by the old well-compiled written
arithmetic which, though more than a hundred years old, may still be
found at the home Mrs. Bettie Hunter, in Paris, Tennessee.
The said Elihu W. Hunter, being the youngest and staying home to care for
his aged parents, fell heir to the old homestead, where he reared his
family nine children, six being by his first wife, Susanna Wilson, and
three by his second wife, Margaret Jones. The older children have all
passed away but one, Mrs. Mag Fisher [Mrs. Mag Fisher died July 1915],
