Joseph H. Wilson was the son of John McClure Wilson and Elizabeth Harned. He was born in Washington County, Indiana. His mother was a member of the Blue River Quaker community in Washington County, Indiana. After his mother's death and his father's remarriage, the family moved to Iowa. He married Virginia A Harris in about 1865. They had one son, William McAfee Wilson, born in 1866. Joseph Wilson's estate file, in Linn County, Iowa, indicates his death date as July 8, 1872, and names his widow, Virginia, and his son William. David T McAfee, Virginia's brother-in-law, was appointed guardian of the son. He owned property in Marion, Iowa.
