Ira Lewis Couch was born February 13, 1872 in Douglas Couty, Kansas, son of William Lewis Couch (1850-1890) and Cynthia E Gordon (1843-1918).

The 1880 Federal Census for Douglas, Kansas (Butler County) shows Ira L. Couch, age 8, born in Kansas; living with his father, William L. Couch, a stock dealer, age 30, born in North Carolina; and his mother, Cynthia, age 37, born in North Carolina. Also living in the household were Ira's siblings: Minnie A. Couch, age 6; Albert Couch, age 4; and Eugene Q. Couch, age 2; all born in Kansas.

The 1890 Oklahoma Territorial Census shows Ira L. Couch, age 18, born in Kansas; living with his mother, Cynthia E. Couch, age 49, born in North Carolina. Also living in the household were Ira's siblings: Minnie Couch, age 16; Albert C. Couch, age 14; Eugene Q. Couch, age 12; and Mary Irene Couch, age 2; all born in Kansas.

The 1900 Federal Census for Elk (now Harrah), Oklahoma (Oklahoma County) shows Ira L. Couch, a farmer, age 28, born February 1872 in Kansas. Living with him was his brother, Eugene Couch, a gardner, age 22, born May 1878; and his sister, Irene Couch, age 12, born May 1888; both born in Kansas. Also living with him was his widowed mother, Cynthia Couch, a nurse, age 57, born January 1843 in North Carolina. The census shows that Cynthia had given birth to 6 children, of which 5 were still living.

On December 16, 1903, Ira married Minnie Allen, who was born April 7, 1882 in Pilot Point, Texas (Denton County). In 1897, Minnie had married Oscar M. Taylor and had one son, Oscar Taylor Jr., by that marriage.

The 1920 Federal Census for Elk (now Harrah), Oklahoma (Oklahoma County) shows Ira L. Couch, a farmer, age 47, born in Kansas; and his wife, Minnie, age 37, born in Texas. Living with them were seven children: Charlie Couch, a farm laborer, age 15; Carmine Couch, a farm laborer, age 13; Bill Couch, age 11; Vera Couch, age 9; Lena Couch, age 7; John Couch, age 4 years 9 months; and Albert Couch, age 2; all born in Oklahoma. In addition, Minnie's son, Oscar Taylor, age 18, born in Texas, was living with the family.

The 1930 Federal Census for Elk (now Harrah), Oklahoma (Oklahoma County) shows Ira L. Couch, a farmer, age 58, born in Kansas; and his wife, Minnie A., age 48, born in Texas. Living with them were five children: Bill Couch, a farm laborer, age 21; Vera F. Couch, age 19; Lena I. Couch, age 17; John R. Couch, age 15; and Albert A. Couch, age 12; all born in Oklahoma.

Minnie died May 24, 1937 in Jones, Oklahoma (Oklahoma County) and was buried there in the Jones Cemetery. Ira died November 4, 1940 in Jones and was buried in the Jones Cemetery beside his wife.

IRA L. COUCH, A PIONEER, PASSES AWAY
Ira L. Couch, long a resident of the State Center district, passed away Monday night at his home. He had been ill for six months. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at Choctaw, and burial was in the Odd Fellows cemetery near Jones. Ira L. Couch, son of William L. and Cynthia Couch, was born Feb. 13, 1872 at Douglas, Butler County, Kansas, and was 68 years, 7 months and 19 days old at the time of his death. Mr. Couch was a real 89er. He was in Oklahoma on the day of the opening, April 22, 1889, and with his father, the late Captain William Ļ. Couch settled on the homestead upon which the Municipal Auditorium at Oklahoma City is now! standing. Within one hour after the signal was given opening Oklahoma to settlement he was plowing on the homestead. He plowed the first furrow on the land where the City now stands. The filing on the land was contested, and, losing in the courts, the family moved in 1894 to the State Center district. Mr. Couch's wife died about a year ago. He is survived by seven children, Charles, an employee of the internal revenue department; C. F., Amarillo, Texas; Bill, Jones; Mrs. Vera Wolf, Jones; Mrs. Lena Whitford, Harrah; John, Stillwater, and a step-son, Oscar Taylor, Glendale, Calif; two brothers, Albert, Luther, and Eugene, Oklahoma City, and a sister, Mrs. Irene Bird, Eudora, Kan.
