Richard P. Schmitt, 67 of Safety Harbor, Fla., formerly of Byesville, Ohio and Wheeling died Monday (Dec 11, 2006) in Niskayuna, N.Y. He was born Feb 3, 1939 in Wheeling, son of the late Lawrence E. and Eulalia Schiffer Schmitt. Mr. Schmitt was the retired owner of Schmitt's Furniture Store in Byesville, Ohio and a former member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Warwood. He was a graduate of Wheeling Central Catholic High School and Wheeling Jesuit University, he received his master's degree from West Virginia University. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Rev. Eugene A. Schmitt, Lawrence J. Schmitt, Sr., and Charles J. Schmitt, and a sister, Louise G. Schmitt. He leaves two daughters, Christina (William) Flaspohler of Niskayuna, N.Y., and Cynthia (Joe) Martino of Columbus, Ohio; four brothers, Henry G. (Virginia) Schmitt, Raymond J. (Marlene) Schmitt, Bishop Bernard W.Schmitt, and Robert H. (Dorothy) Schmitt, all of Wheeling; three grandchildren, Michael, Erik and Emma Flaspohler of Niskayuna, N.Y.; along with his former wife, Jeanette Schmitt of Pleasant City, Ohio. Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1400 Eoff Street, Wheeling, handled arrangements. Funeral Liturgy was celebrated Saturday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Warwood, with the Most Reverent Bishop Bernard Schmitt as celebrant. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling.
