Mary Atkinson married Sgt. William Surby of the British Army shortly after 1821 when his unit returned from helping to guard Napoleon Bonaparte on St. Helena. When her husband was transferred to Canada she accompanied him; and there they had six sons. Five of the sons eventually moved to the US and fought in the Civil War.
She and her husband died of what is believed to be cholera in September, 1852.
