Marjorie Jean (Mrs. George Burnell) Egan, age 76, of Cuba City and recently of Sunset Park Retirement Community, Dubuque, Iowa, died surrounded by her family at 6:10 a.m. Wednesday, July 4, 2001, at Southwest Health Center Nursing Home, Cuba City, after a two-and-a-half year battle with cancer. Marjorie Jean Terry was born in Tampa, Fla., on Nov. 13, 1924, the daughter of William and Ida (Wade) Terry. She grew up in Macon, Ga., and graduated from W.A. Miller Women's High School in 1942. During World War II, she became a volunteer for the USO where she met her future husband, George B. Egan, who was stationed at Herbert Smart Air Force Base in Georgia. They were married May 2, 1942, in Macon. Upon her husband's discharge from service in the British Isles, the family settled in the Cuba City area where they farmed, ran several businesses and raised their children. Marjorie received her bachelor of science degree in education from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 1963. After teaching a short while in Dubuque, she accepted a position in the Cuba City School System. She retired in 1987 after teaching kindergarten for 24 years. She was a member of the Wisconsin Education Retired Teachers Association and the United Methodist Church. Marjorie was an avid reader with an extensive library from which she was ready to lend books to family and friends. An animal lover, she especially liked cats, dogs and horses, and enjoyed lending a helping hand with her children's show horses. Her enjoyment of flowers extended to learning about and experimenting with perennials and wildflowers in her gardens. Many hours were spent watching the birds that visited her yard. Christmas was a favorite time of the year for Marjorie and she spent much time decorating her home and preparing wonderful foods as part of her family's Yuletide tradition. Marjorie always loved shopping and movies. Some of her favorite days were those spent shopping, going to lunch, taking in a movie and then shopping some more. Marjorie is survived by four children, Dr. James B. (Yvette) Egan of Hazel Green, George Robert Bob (Glenda) Egan of Cuba City, Sandra Kay Eustice of Eau Claire, Wis., and Marlene (Jerry) Schollmeyer of Dubuque, Iowa; and six grandchildren, Corinne Eustice of San Francisco, Calif., Alison Eustice of Colorado Springs, Colo., Roger (Becky) Egan of Cuba City, and Kelly, Katie and Kari Egan of Hazel Green, Wis. She was eagerly awaiting the birth of her first great-grandchild in August. Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband, George Burnell Egan, on Nov. 29, 1997; her parents; a brother, Paul Wade Terry; two sisters, Betty Jo Williams and Bobbie Jane Daniels-Wilbanks; an infant grandson, Christian Egan; and a brother-in-law, Merrill Egan. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 7, 2001, at the UNITED METHODIST CHURCH in Cuba City, with the Rev. Scott Crandall officiating. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. Friday, July 6, 2001, at CASEY FUNERAL HOME in Cuba City, and prior to the service on Saturday at the church. The family wishes to thank the following: Dr. John Viner, M.D., and staff at Dubuque Internal Medicine for more than 18 years of quality medical care and compassionate concern; surgeons, Dr. James Hall and Dr. Keith Shaw; Dr. Lawrence Kukla, M.D., and the caring staff at Medical Associates Oncology Department; Dr. Anil Sood, M.D., Jill Nyaack and staff in gyn-oncolgy at the Clinical Cancer Center; and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at Sunset Park Assisted Living and Retirement Community for its friendship and tender loving care during her residence there; thanks is also extended to her faithful friends who visited and sent cards and prayers. Our deepest appreciation is extended to the staff at Southwest Health Center Nursing Facility, who provided such loving concern and compassionate care during difficult days; and to Kim and Mary, nurses with Grant County Hospice.
