Marie Kernaghan was born 9 JUN 1889, the daughter of William A and Georgine A (Mitchel) Kernaghan. Marie Kernaghan was educated at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans, the Junior College of the Sacred Heart, New Orleans, The Normal School of the Sacred Heart in Albany, NY, and received her Baccalaureate, Masters and PhD in physics from Saint Louis University, 1921, 1925, and 1929, respectively. Mother Kernaghan is said to be the first woman west of the Mississippi to receive a PhD in physics.

Marie Kernaghan entered the Society of the Sacred Heart, 2 JUL 1908 and was professed in Rome, 4 AUG 1916.

Mother Marie Kernaghan RSCJ, was a Religious of the Sacred Heart for more than seventy years. Mother Kernaghan was a great intellectual, but more importantly a member of the Society of the Sacred Heart -- the religious community founded by Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat. Mother Kernaghan never tired of talking about the great love she had for Jesus and especially her devotion to Our Lord's Sacred Heart.

Mother Kernaghan lived her retirement years at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Saint Charles, MO, where she worked tirelessly to promote the cause of Sister Josefa Menendez RSCJ -- the young Sister to whom Our Lord made several revelations in the 1920s.

Mother Kernaghan contributed to The Society of the Sacred Heart in North America by Mother Louise Callan RSCJ, which was published by Longmans in 1937.
