John learned telegraphy under B.W. Thompson at Beidson, Mo. and started working for the Wabash R.R. in 1902. A few years later he taught Telegraphy for a short time at a Business College in Maryville, Mo., but returned to the Wabash where he continued working until 1950
He came to Silver City in 1917 where he became active in community life, serving on the School Board for 21 years, and the City Council for 22 years; also being a Past Master of the Masons and a Past Patron of the Eastern Star.
He married Grace Kidd in 1902 and they were the parents of Eldon 1904-1994 (Mrs George Burgoin) and Wuanita 1907-1989 (Mrs. Roy Gater).
