On September 29, 1918, Kerr, NC Native Corporal Isaac Manley Newton becomes one of 200 soldiers from NC to be awarded the Distinguished Service Cross Medal for heroism in World War I near Bullecourt, France. With another soldier, he "…attacked and destroyed two enemies machine-gun posts, 200 yards in advance of [allied] lines. While the other soldier stood guard at the entrance of a dugout, he entered it and brought out 75 German soldiers and three officers, who were taken back to [allied] lines as prisoners. Home of Record: Kerr, N.C." He later became Acting Postmaster at Kerr, NC following the murder of his father, Postmaster Frederick Ferdinand Newton.

Sampson County did honor him when he returned home from the war. He received a hero's welcome when he returned to North Carolina, including being given a gold watch at the Sampson County Fair (held in Clinton) on November 10, 1919 – credited with what was called "…the second-biggest individual feat of the world war…".

There's a sad end to the story - he died tragically - at age 56 on August 22, 1952, two days after a tree fell on his back, fracturing his spine. The accident occurred at a used auto parts store that he operated in New Bern, NC. ── Source: Fred Kerr‎ Sampson County Historical Society
