Rev. Carey was graduated from Yale University in 1849, after which he was graduated from Auburn Seminary in 1853. He was ordained to Presbyterian ministry in January 1854 by the Presbytery of Buffalo (in New York). He then pastored Presbyterian parishes in New York and Illinois, after which he was pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Keokuk, Iowa (1860-1862). Later, he was pastor of the Presbyterian congregation in Waterloo, Iowa (1873-1875). Then he went to Ohio to be a pastor in a Congregational Church.
