Born June 7, 1937 in Winfield, he was the son of Julius C. and Viola (McCort) Powell. He was raised and educated in Winfield graduating from Winfield High School. Dick attended Southwestern College for a short time before enlisting in the United States Marines Corp where he served a tour of duty.
He was united in marriage to Barbara Meier on December 23, 1959 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Winfield. The couple made their home in Winfield until 1967 when they moved to Russell, Kansas. They lived there until 1981 when they returned to Winfield.
Dick worked for his father's business, Powell Construction and Concrete, when he was younger. He worked as a dispatcher for the Winfield Police Department for seven years and as an advertising manager at the Russell Daily News in Russell, Kansas. When he returned to Winfield, he worked in sales at the Belle Plaine Newspaper in Belle Plaine and at the Winfield Daily Courier. When his health began to fail, he drove the transportation bus for Good Samaritan Village until his retirement.
He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Winfield, the Lion's Club in Russell and served on the Board of Babe Ruth Baseball League of Kansas. Dick enjoyed yard work and tennis and officiated high school basketball for twenty years. He also coached Babe Ruth Baseball. His ultimate love was KU Jayhawk Basketball.
His family includes: His wife: Barbara Powell of Winfield; His sons: Randy Powell and wife, Joetta of Russell, KS; Mike Powell and wife Tammy of Winfield; and Rob Powell of Belton, MO; His daughter: Teri Coble and husband, David of Winfield; and His grandchildren: Kelsi Pope, Bethany Coble, Jacob Coble and Megan Powell. In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by his brother, Gene Powell and his sister, Patty Cadwell.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday afternoon, February 16, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Private family interment will take place at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday evening from 4 to 7.
A Memorial has been established in Mr. Powell's name for Trinity Lutheran Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
