During a search and clear mission in the Que Son Mountains, Company A made contact and engaged a NVA force. Fire fights with the enemy lasted throughout the day and into the night, pulling back from the Marines postions, the enemy utilized effective 60mm mortar fire against the Marines resulting in the deaths of two men and the wounding of several others. PFC Carter was one of the casualties when a mortar round landed near his position causing his death from multiple fragmentation wounds.
