Richard's B-26C crew was assigned to the 336th.Bomb Group, 478th Bomb Squadron.
Their plane went into a spiraling dive and crashed into a swamp on a second
attempt to land at Avon Park. All crew members were killed.

Richard "Dick" Monford Condit was born in Seneca, located in Faulk County, South Dakota, on May 13,1912. His parents were Cloyd and Eva. Cloyd, his father, worked as a barber. Richard lived in Miller, South Dakota, as a child before moving with his family to Waukegan, Illinois, for a time. Prior to entering the service, Richard worked for the Universal Credit Finance Corporation and had lived in Rapid City, Deadwood, and Spearfish; he also worked for C.W. Palmer in Miller. On October 3, 1941, Richard married Lena Palmer at Newcastle. They have a daughter, Shirley, who was born in Miller.
Richard enlisted in July of 1942. On September 2, 1942, he entered active service at Ft. Snelling, Minnesota. Sgt. Condit served in the 473rd Bombardment Squadron and was stationed at Avon Park, Florida. Sgt. Richard Monford Condit was killed on May 31, 1943, while training for a bombing mission in the Florida Everglades.
At the time of his death, Sgt. Condit's wife and daughter were living in Custer, South Dakota. Sgt. Condit's body was returned home for burial at the Odd Fellow's Cemetery in Miller, South Dakota.
Richard Condit was a great soldier who bravely gave his life while serving his country proudly.
