John Arnett Stokes, known as J.A., was the son of Jasper C. Stokes and Eliza Slawson.

His wife was Lydia "Lyddy" Dillard Stokes.

J.A. and Lyddy had five children before her death at a very young age. The children were:
Vivian (Worthington), Leslie May (Pittman), Tom DeLeon, Exie Lee (Garner) and Lilly (Aldridge) Stokes.

Lyddy and J. A. farmed in the Tennessee Valley and their graves were moved to Rest Haven when the Valley was flooded to make Lake Belton and the Dam.
