Industrialist, US Congressman. In 1834, helped found the Phelps Dodge Corporation, a mining concern that remained highly successful during the 19th Century, with his father-in-law Anson Greene Phelps, serving as its head for 40 years. He used much of his wealth in philanthropic causes, and was an ardent abolitionist. He was one of the founders of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in 1851. He was elected as a Republican to represent New York's 8th Congressional District, serving from 1865 to 1867. His son, Charles Cleveland Dodge, served as a Brigadier General in the Union Army during the Civil War. Today, his company of Phelps Dodge, exists in the present day as Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold Incorporated.
