WEST DENNIS — James J. Greeley, of West Dennis, passed away peacefully on Feb. 12, 2010, at Hospice of Naples.He was the husband of the late Irene T. (Flynn) Greeley; and beloved father of Susan I. Murati of Harwich Port, James Jr. of West Dennis, Thomas of Roslindale, and Joseph of Norwood. He is also survived by six grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret McCarthy of Brighton.Jim was born in East Boston. His parents passed away when he was a young boy and he relocated to Brighton to be raised by his Uncle Mike and Aunt Margaret. He was a member of St. Columkille's first graduating class (1936).Enlisted in the Naval Reserve, he was called up for service in early December 1941. He arrived at Pearl Harbor within days of the attack. He served there at Pacific Naval Headquarters as a radio man from 1941-1945.Jim began his career with the Boston Elevated Railway as a trolley operator in 1939. He retired from the MBTA as a well-respected superintendent of Surface Transportation in 1981.He and Irene raised their four children in Roslindale and were very active in the Holy Name Parish, where for years he served as president of the St. Vincent dePaul.Summer residents of Cape Cod since 1964, they retired here in 1985. A lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, Jim served as a volunteer at many St. Pius X parish events.Jim was also a longtime seasonal resident of Marco Island, Fla., and the Seawatch Community. An avid singer, Jim was known as the Marco Island beach's beloved "Sunset Singer," entertaining and inspiring with his nightly rendition of "God Bless America."Friends and family are invited to call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, at Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth. A funeral service will begin at the funeral home at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, with a funeral Mass at 12:30 p.m. at Saint Pius X Church, Station Avenue, South Yarmouth. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Mondayat Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.Donations in Jim's name may be made to Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018.
