Highway Patrolman Bob East died at North Carolina Memorial Hospital on Thursday, Dec. 21, 1972, from injuries suffered in a crash Dec. 13. He was the third trooper this year to die in the line of duty.
East, 56, crashed his patrol car into a bridge at U.S. 1 and U.S. 401 just north of Raleigh.
East had been on the critical list since he suffered head, leg, and internal injuries in the wreck. The injuries required amputation of his left leg.
Previously this year two troopers had been fatally wounded by motorists they had stopped. They were Joe G. Wright of Roxboro and Larry T. Walton of Lumberton.
East had been stationed at Wake Forest since he joined the patrol in 1947.
East is survived by his widow, Ruby Jane (Simmons) East, a daughter, Shirley East Matheny of Raleigh, and a son, Thomas Charles East of Wheaton, Md.
East was a native of Pilot Mountain and an Army veteran of World War II.
