This marker is a cenotaph. According to the New Ulm News, Oct. 1, 1898, his body was shipped to De Smet, SD for burial:
"Sergeant Bennett, of Co. M, Blue Earth City, 12th regiment, died in the hospital here yesterday forenoon, of typhoid pneumonia. His home was in De Smet, S.D., where the body will be shipped this afternoon."
