Spanish-American War veteran of Company M, 12th Minnesota Infantry. He was 23 years of age when he enlisted on April 29, 1898, at Blue Earth in Faribault County, Minn. He mustered into the service on May 6 at Camp Ramsey. He was hospitalized from September 22-30 in New Ulm, Minn. for pneumonia and died on Sep. 30.

This marker is a cenotaph. According to the New Ulm News, Oct. 1, 1898, his body was shipped to De Smet, SD for burial:

"Sergeant Bennett, of Co. M, Blue Earth City, 12th regiment, died in the hospital here yesterday forenoon, of typhoid pneumonia. His home was in De Smet, S.D., where the body will be shipped this afternoon."
