James William Gillespie, 82, of 4 Ross St., Brandon, went to be with the Lord Thursday, June 19, 2003. He passed away at his home after a brief illness.
He was the husband of Ada Smith Gillespie and was born in Pickens, the son of the late Frank Gillespie and Cleo [Patterson] Gillespie King.
Mr. Gillespie retired from textiles in 1983 after 45 years (40 years with Abney Mills and five years with J.P. Stevens, White Horse Plant). He was of the Pentecostal faith.
"Papa" was a good Christian and the best daddy and papa in the world. He was a loving friend to all and never met anyone he did not like.
In addition to his wife of 66 years, he is survived by three daughters, Barbara G. O'Bryant, and husband, Horace, of Easley, Carolyn G. Charping, and husband, Ray, of Greenville, and Patricia G. Hunt, of Easley; and a very special granddaughter raised in the home, Pamela Cisson.
"Papa" was the proud great-great-grandfather to five generations of children. He had eight grandchildren, Pamela Cisson, Dana Martin, Brad Cisson, Ray Charping Jr., Stacy Berdine, Patty Pardue, Melanie Tyre and Robert Hunt Jr.; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a special nephew, Larry Gillespie; and many other special nieces and nephews.
A brother, Charles Junior Gillespie, predeceased him.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest.
Funeral services will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at the funeral home, with burial at Graceland Cemetery, West.
Memorials may be made to Cancer Society of Greenville County, 113 Mills Ave., Greenville, SC 29605.
The family is at the residence.
