He is the son of William Harrison Barnes and Mary Dement.
He married Anna Eliza Leffler 1 January, in Fremont County, Iowa in 1863. They had one son, James W. Barnes, who was born in 1864. Anna "Eliza" died 5 January 1864 in Fremont, Iowa. (Possibly in childbirth) Their son died after 1870, as an infant.

Alfred enlisted Nov. 5, 1864 and was a Private in Company "H" (which served with company "B") in the 13th Iowa Infantry Regiment, for the Union, in the Civil War. He was honorably discharged on June 7th, 1865.

Alfred remarried 14 Sep 1867, to Mary C. (Beason) Evans in Mahaska Co. Iowa. They had a daughter Clarinda Ada Barnes born Aug. 10, 1868 in Union Township, Poweshiek, Iowa.

Alfred worked in the lumber industry and suffered a hernia on the job. This left him disabled.

He had heart disease, but died from liver failure.
