He married Jolena Barlow on 26 Apr 1882 in Clinton, Henry County, Missouri.

J. F. Martindale, one of Delaware county's highly respected citizens, living near Greeley, was born March 7, 1851, and departed this life December 5th, 1914, at the home of J. W. Ocker, of West Union, Iowa. The deceased is the son of one of Delaware county's oldest and most respected citizens, Rev. John Martindale, of the Christian church. Mr. Martindale was a musician from infancy, although he never took a lesson in his life, he composed many very beautiful and popular pieces, Mr. Martindale has traveled with several musical and theatrical companies and was known on the stage as "Frank Howard". Mr. Martindale was married at Clinton, Missouri on April 26, 1882. He is survived by his wife and two sons, Hugh and John, of New York. During the past five years the deceased has been in poor health.

The funeral services were held on Sunday at Greeley from the Christian church, the Masons having charge of the ceremony.
