He attended Northeast High School in Oklahoma City and in November 1945, joined the Army and served in the Army Air Corps in Japan during World War II. He spent 17 months in the Pacific theatre, and then returned to the states where he was discharged in April 1947.
After being discharged from the Army, Calvin met and married the love of his life, Esther Lena Rice, on August 22, 1947, in Oklahoma City. Their marriage lasted almost 50 years, and they were separated then only by Lena's death. Calvin went to work at Tinker Air Force Base in April 1947. He had a most successful career, advancing to a GS-12 supervisory position. He retired on January 4, 1986, with 40 years of federal government service.
Calvin loved the great outdoors, fishing, camping, collecting rock specimens, workworking, clock repair, refinishing furniture, and going to auctions. Calvin wrote the following poem in honor of his wife and his two daughters: A love arrives and then departs, ever to be remembered. Evidence of that love abounds, two lovely daughters...
Calvin died on October 12, 2003 in the Norman Regional Hospital in Norman, Oklahoma (Cleveland County) after a lengthy illness and he was buried in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma beside his wife.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; his sister, Rosa Lee Phipps; and his brother, David Green. He was survived by his two daughters, Nancy Louise, and Karen Kay, his sister, Patsy VanDusen; his brother, Darryl Green; four grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.
