FRITCH - (Special) - A Borger man was killed instantly and his wife injured in a one-car automobile accident Friday night at 10:15 p.m. on State Highway 136 approximately 100 yards east of the Fritch city limits.

Dead is Leo L. (Dub) Updike, 43, of 704 Bartush. His wife, Hazel, was in fair condition Saturday night in North Plains Hospital with a broken arm and abrasions.

According to investigating Highway Patrol officers, Updike apparently lost control of his automobile while traveling at a high rate of speed toward Fritch. The car overturned four times and Updike was thrown approximately 22 feet from the automobile. The car was completely demolished.

Justice of the Peace J.D. Miller pronounced Updike dead at the scene of the accident. Mrs. Updike, who was not thrown from the wreckage, was taken to North Plains Hospital by Tri-City Ambulance.

Services for Updike, a Phillips Petroleum Company employee, will be held Monday at 5 p.m., in the First Christian Church of Borger with Rev. Clyde Nichols officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Park Cemetery under the direction of Simpson's Funeral Home.

He was a member of the First Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife; six brothers, Ralph of Olathe, Kan., O.E. of 931 Nelson in Borger, Sam E. of Sweeny, Ted of Covington, Okla., Ed, stationed with the U.S. Air Force in Chanute, Kan., and Al of Kirkwood, Mo.; and one stepdaughter, Mrs. Glenda Savage of Amarillo.

Pallbearers will be R.D. Royse, Gerald Warren, Wayne Ewing, Dewey Malicoat, A.G. Eason and W.H. Acker.
