Within days of his volunteering, however, the men of the 86th were on the move and would soon cross the border into South Carolina. Charles probably joined the 86th somewhere in South Carolina. Soon they were again chasing Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston's troops in North Carolina and in March of 1865, Charles was most like present when the men of the 86th were engaged with those troops in the Battles of Averysboro and Bentonville, North Carolina, after which, General Johnston surrendered his troops to those of General Sherman, sealing the Confederacy's fate.
In May of 1865, with the Civil War now over, the Army decided to retain the services of the late war recruits of the 86th, while the original surviving members of the 86th would be discharged so that they could return home. On May 18, 1865, Private Charles A. Brock was transferred with 5 other Co. K late war recruits to Co. F, of the 34th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry for about 2 more months of service.
