Richard grew up in the Argentine District of Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. After training at Sheppard Army Air Field in Texas, he was deployed to the European Theater serving in England. He served from Jul 28, 1942 until discharged on Dec 21, 1945. Upon returning to Kansas City, Richard was employed by the Kansas City Structural Steel Corp. where he had worked, until retirement, as an inspector. He was a deacon at the Northeast Presbyterian Church and was active in the Church's food assistance program.
