A dedication program for the marker brought some 300 persons to the cemetery, located a quarter mile between SH-21 and Porter Springs of FM-2967. Also thanks to Fred Clapp, one of the Stephen F. The public ceremony during the planting brought County and city officials to the program in 1998 on Austin's birthday and anniversary under the sponsorship of the Sam Houston Chapter of the Sons of the Republic of TX. He and his wife, Claire Jean have assisted with plans for the development of the Houston County Visitors Center/Museum at Crockett and have been ardent supporters of the County's historical research and genealogy collections in the Commission's office. Mr. Clapp continued the historical work, which his ancestor Elisha Clapp began, in Houston County during the 1830's.
