John Pace and Mary Ann Panther were married about 1854 and had 4 children (David Marion, John Henry, Sarah Matilda, and William Winsfield Scott) prior to John's death.

However, Mary Ann has two children AFTER John's death. One is Dock Shuffling Pace, who's birth certificate states his father is Henry Pace. Also, Mack Andrew Pace is listed his father as John Pace. The father of both of these sons is actually unknown. Dr. George Jones (deceased) of the NC Historical Society of Henderson County pointed out to me that the last 2 children (Dock Shuffling Pace and Mack Andrew Pace) were conceived and born after John Pace died at the POW camp in Chicago, IL. He said that the names of their fathers were unknown by him but he thought that he had heard that one of their fathers might have been a Gilbert. Since Mary was not married and still carrying the Pace name of John, she named these 2 children by the name she still had, Pace.

There are no other records (other than Dock's death certificate) that show Mary Ann was ever remarried to a Henry Pace. It is possible that John had a middle name Henry as one of his sons was named John Henry Pace.
