William Ross was the son of David Kindrick Williams and Mary Eveline (Appleby) Williams. Apparently he was known good with his hands as it is reported that as a young man he repaired a vintage rifle for his father. He married 1) Martha Cathrine "Marthey" MONTGOMERY in 1877, Greene County, MO, they had 9 children: Thomas Monroe, Orey Elmer, Clarence David, James Glover, Stella Mae, Roscoe S. (youth death), Ira (infant death), Minnie and Winnie. When Marthey died (1896), rather than give up his children to adoption or foster care, he moved his family to the town of Bee, Chickasaws Nation, Indian Territory. After Statehood, Bee, Johnston County, Oklahoma. While in Bee he became the Postmaster, Met and married 2) Lillian Etta "Lilly" Carruth 'nee Nicholas, on 5 Jan. 1902, a widow with 2 children: Thelma and Leon Estelle. They had 6 children: Lavinnie (youth death), Arvel Gail, Edwin Stuart, Gwendolyn, Ima Jean and William Ross (Jr). Ross was talented blacksmith by trade having owned his own shop in several cities in southwest Missouri, Oklahoma and Arkansas.
