The son of Cal Matthew Watson and Eliza Susan Harris, Samuel was born and died at Idlewild Plantation in Caddo Parish. He married Kate Evaline Beck on 3 June 1872 in Caddo Parish. Based on his obituary, Kate predeceased him as the article says his daughters were "doubly orphaned" with his passing. One of their daughters Little We We died a year and three months after Samuel. They had another daughter, Madelyn, who married Alvin Lake. She died from tuberculosis on 13 March 1926 in San Antonio and is buried in Memphis, Tennessee.
