Angel Contraras Rom-ero was born in 1918 at Washington Mining Camp, Ariz. He was preceded in death by wife, Erminia C. Romero, six siblings, his mother and father.

Loving father of six: Amelia Coon, (Florida), Becky Deans, (Florida), Florence (Phil) Barnes, (N.C.), Raymond (Kathy) Romero, (Ariz.), Rick (Kelly) Romero, (Ariz.), and Selene (Marty) Schiffner, (Ariz.); grandfather of 13: Steven, Mark, Warren, Cindy Coon, William Deans, Darren, David Barnes, Rodney, Eugene Romero, Yolanda, Ricky Romero, Jeniffer, Melony Schiffner; and great-grandfather of 12.

Angel graduated from Benson Union High School and was very athletic in track and field events, and also loved playing baseball and golfing. He served in the United States Army in 1944. He retired from the Apache Nitrogen Plant after 35 years, worked for the Benson Hospital for 10 years, and a bartender at the VFW in his spare time.

Angel was active in the American Legion, VFW, and Tombstone Vigilantes. He loved serving at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, whether he was helping with maintenance, playing the guitar for the choir or working on the shrine. Angel loved his mariachi music and making other people happy, and with his brothers and sister by his side, their serenading did just that, whether it was for a birthday, new arrival to Benson, anniversaries, or the bride-to-be the morning of her wedding. Although those days are gone, they will live forever in the hearts of those who knew our dad and all his loving family.

Cared for by his son Rick and Kelly for 20 years until his peaceful passing on Jan. 23, 2010.

Services will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church on Friday, Feb. 19, at 10 a.m.
