John may have gone to California with his uncles, George and Bernard on or about 1911. All three of them were carpenters. John (went by the name of Herman) and his uncle, Bernard worked for the Fox Film Company, on the corner of Sunset and Western in Los Angeles, CA. (Fox Kiddie Pictures). They were probably around to see Charlie Chaplin and Tom Mix,among others, of the silent pictures. He was working at Paramount when he died (probably of Spanish flu of 1918). After John died, the studio sent a black woman to Mary to help her take care of the babies.
