He was a carpenter by trade. He was appointed town clerk and the following years he was elected to that office but the next time he was defeated. He was fond of public affair. Much of his time in later years was passed about the court house and he was a friend of all the officials. He was prominent in Odd Fellow circles and was a member of the First Methodist church.
He was well known figure in Decatur which had been his home for 55 years. He was born in the east. In 1865 he was married to Miss Churchman, daughter of Henry Churchman of this city. No children were born to them but they adopted and reared two girls, Alma Koehler now a resident of Chicago and Elle Koehler who died several years ago.
