Rev. Grier served as Pastor of Great Island and Pine Creek churches for 37 years , and performed 615 marriage ceremonies. When the British fleet lay in Chesapeake Bay in 1814, he was among the first citizens to volunteer to assist in repelling them in case they should attempt to land. Rev. Grier had four sons and seven daughters.

Isabella Frances Gallagher, Sarah Agnes Brown, Lucinda Patty, Martha Lucinda and Joseph James.
After Mary died he was married three additional times:
first to Elcy A. Hamilton and they had a son Robert H. Grier; then to Rebecca Bailey; and lastly, to Mrs. Margaret Moodey Snodgrass.
