On March 28, 1871, he was married to Catherine J. West, who passed away November 11, 1917. To this union three sons were born, Granville C. who died June 9, 1918; William R. who died December 24, 1929; and Ray, with whom he has made his home since the passing of his life companion.
In March 1885, he came with his family to Harvey county, and lived until 1909 on a farm in Richland township. In those early days he took an active part in the affairs of his township and the county, and was township trustee for many years. In 1909 he retired from active life and has since lived in Newton. He was instrumental in the organization of the G. A. R. post at Whitewater and served as its commander, retaining his membership there until the discontinuance of the post there, when he transferred his membership to the local post.
