Robert Dale Griner, son of Elijah Nathaniel and Clara Iona (Crawford) Griner, was born September 29, 1921 in Hoopeston, Illinois.

He was inducted into the Army August 26, 1942 at Chicago. He served as a Squad Leader in Company I, 137th Infantry Regiment. He was wounded in action during the battle for Saint-Lô, France, July 15 and was awarded a Purple Heart Medal on July 17, 1944.

He was again wounded just south of Saint-Lô, France on July 31 when he suffered serious shrapnel wounds. He was transferred to the 51st Field Hospital and died of his wounds the following day, August 1, 1944.

He was posthumously awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge August 2, 1944.
