Nelvin Van Essen, 78, Edgerton, died Friday, May 14, 2004 at Edgebrook Care Center, Edgerton.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 17 at First Christian Reformed Church, Edgerton, with burial in Hillside Cemetery.

Nelvin was born to Jake and Clara (Bolt) Van Essen on July 28, 1925 in Murray County, Minn. He grew up on a farm by Edgerton where he lived most of his life. He graduated from Edgerton Christian Elementary School.

On Jan. 12, 1947 he married Jennie Vander Top. Following their marriage, they farmed until his retirement in 1988.

He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church; a member of Gideons and a volunteer for other Christian organizations.

He is survived by his wife, Jennie; seven children, Ron (Deb) Van Essen, Ripon, Calif.; Virgil (Willie) Van Essen, Edgerton; Ken (Diane) Van Essen, Yankton, S.D.; Elaine (Lloyd) Prins, Edgerton; Gloria (Brian) Top, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Marcia (Ryan) Achterhoff, Orange City, Iowa; Evonne (John) Top, Luverne; 23 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers, Clarence, Henry and Wes; and two sisters, Ella Kooiman and Joyce Bruxvoort.

He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Hanky and Raymond.
