He was married twice, 1st to Mrs. Osceola Adams Gilbert and 2nd two Almadge Pruitt Gilbert. He died Thursday May 14, 1987 in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Survivors included: a daughter, Mrs. Vinelle Gilbert Jolley, five sons, Paul, Merrill, Raymond, John and Smiley Gilbert, 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He was 92 years of age at his demise.
