Dorothy began her teaching career at the age of 17 at Peach Grove Grade School, in rural Wilson County. She graduated from Lindsborg's Bethany College in 1939. After raising her four children, she returned to to teaching as a substitute in the Downey, California, school system and later was a librarian at Griffiths Junior High, Downey. She completed her teaching career in Lindsborg at Soderstrom Elementery.
Dorothy traveled extensively in the United States and Europe. In her 80s, she traveled to Guatemala, and at the age of 84, went on two mission trips to Mexico with Messiah Lutheran Church to work on building homes.
She was a member of Lindsborg Retired Teachers Association, Lindsborg's Swedish Group and Messiah Lutheran Church. She was a former member of the American Association of University Women and the Lindsborg Library Board.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth "K.O." Esping, in 1967; a daughter, Marcia Esping ; a brother, Neil Nelson; and sister Ellen Deakins.
Survivors included her son, Mark Esping; two daughters Marla Elmquist and Marlysue Holmquist; grandsons, Ryan and John Holmquist; and granddaughter, Majkin Holmquist.
