Elof Johnson, the second of nine children, grew up and attended school in Bessemer Township, MI. He worked as a track watcher for the maintenance department of the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad, from which he retired in 1972. He never married.

A soft spoken and genuinely nice person, he spent most of his life in his childhood home on N. Geneva Rd., moving to Moorhead, Minnesota, in 1987 to receive assisted care near his brother Oscar.
