Enlisted as a 2nd Corporal on August 21, 1862 at the age of 21. Joined Co. C, 36th Iowa Infantry Regiment on September 18, 1862. Promoted to Corporal on February 9, 1863.

Taken prisoner by Confederate forces on April 25, 1864 at Marks Mills, AR. Died of disease as a POW on September 12, 1864 at Tyler, TX.
