Mrs. Carpenter was born in Surry County on March 14, 1920, to the late Willie and Huldah Davis Wolfe. She was retired from Spencer's Incorporated and a faithful member of Blues Grove Baptist Church as long as her health permitted.
Survivors include her daughters, JoAnn and husband Ray Simpson of Mount Airy, Mary and husband J.V. Lowe of Dobson and Brenda Kay Francis of Durham; nine grandchildren, Gaye Holyfield, Dean Simpson, Jean Spencer, Sammy Simpson, James R. Simpson, Jr., Lisa Shuller, Javey Lowe, Lon Lowe and Lynn Nassar; 16 great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; three sisters, Marie Atkins of Mount Airy, Viola Willard of Yadkinville and Louise Patterson of Stanton, Va.; and a brother, J.W. Wolfe of Dobson.
Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday March 2, 2010, at Blues Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Sammy Lawson and the Rev. Roland McCraw. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Moody-Davis Funeral Home where her body will remain until time to be taken to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the funeral service.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Central Continuing Care 1287 Newsome Street Mount Airy, NC 27030 or to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200 Mount Airy, NC 27030.
