Son of Alberic I, the High Chamberlain of France, and Joan Bassett, grandson of Aubrey de Mello and Aelis Dammartin, Gilbert Basswet and Edith d'Oilly. He was born circa 1135.

Alberic married Matilda of Clermont, the daughter of Renaud II, Comte de Clermont and Clemence od Bar-le-duc. They had the following children:
* Renaud I, Count of Dammartin, married Marie de Châtillon & Ide de Lorraine
* Simon of Dammartin, married 3rd to Marie, Countess of Ponthieu
* Julia, married Hugh de Gournay
* Agnes, married William de Fiennes
