Obituary:
June 15, 1917 Holdenville Democrat: Sudden death of Judge J. Ross Bailey. (Holdenville, Hughes, Oklahoma)
The people of Holdenville and Hughes County were shocked last Saturday forenoon to learn that Judge J. Ross Bailey had died suddenly in a hotel in Weleetka at about 10 o'clock that morning.

Judge Bailey left here Thursday evening with Henry Stilwell and went to Hanna where they were in the country and spent the day, Friday, in straightening up some titles, in driving into Hanna that evening they were caught in a rain and hail storm and were wet through. After drying their clothes at Hanna they went to Weleetka on a night train on their way home. The next morning Judge Bailey complained of not feeling well and ate but little breakfast. After breakfast he went to his room to lie down until it was time to catch the train and asked Mr. Stilwell to call him when it was time to go. Mr. Stilwell went to his room about 10 o'clock and found Judge Bailey on the floor apparently dead. It was thought there was some life left when he was found but he had passed away by the time the doctor arrived. It was evident that he had gotten up from the bed and gone to the window where some blood was found, and had then gone back to the foot of the bed where he fell. The doctors announced the death resulted from approlexy.
Judge Bailey was one of the most popular and best known men in Hughes county. He was about 12 years old when he came to Holdenville in 1908 and was for several years assistant county attorney. After leaving that office he practiced law for several years as a member of the law firm of Crump, Skinner and Bailey and later practiced law by himself until his election as county judge in 1912. He served two terms as county judge, refusing to become a candidate for another term, since which time he has been practicing law as a partner of J. L. Skinner.
Judge Bailey was elected as a delegate of the last National Democratic Convention. His untimely death is universally regretted by a large circle of friends and by the people of Hughes County.
The body was brought to Holdenville and was taken on the 6 o'clock train Saturday to the home of his sister, Mrs. Sid Lowe, where it remained until 4 o'clock the next evening when it was shipped to Lindale, Texas, his former home. The remains were accompanied by Mrs. Lowe, her brother-in-law, Dr. J. T. Landrum, and also by Miss Mary Hill, representing the law office of which he was a member, and by the Court Clerk, E. M. Washington, who was Judge Baileys court clerk during the four years he was county judge.
The funeral was held in the family home in Lindale, Texas Monday.
