Martin Dole Archer

ARCHER Martin Dole Archer, CDR., USN (Ret.) of Springfield, VA on December 30, 2008 at Bethesda Naval Medical Center.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen, after more than 59 happy years of marriage. Loving father of Patricia Travers and Bonnie Archer, grandfather of Tamara Mills, Deborah Travers, Emily, Meredith and Tremain Archer Hatch; great-grandfather of Eric, Abigale and Payton Mills and Rebecca Mendiola.

Cdr. Archer's U.S. Navy service included duty in the Flag Allowance of the World War II command Cdr in Chief US Fleet. He later served in the NATO command Supreme Allied Comrd Atlantic. In addition to assignments in Washington and other sea duty tours, he served as Flag Secretary and Aide to CDR Amphibious Group One when that command was home ported in the Philippines. For his last assignment overseas, he received a Commendation Medal from the Cdr Naval Forces Europe for his performance of duty as Chief Staff Officer, Naval Activities, U.K.

Friends may call at the Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield, VA on Saturday, January 3 at noon with a service to follow at 1 p.m. Interment Arlington National Cemetery with Full Military Honors will be held on March 9, 2009.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his name for local charity to the Springfield United Methodist Church, 7047 Old Keene Mill Road, Springfield, VA 22150.
