B. George Abeyounis, 86, of Wilmington, NC peacefully went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 8, 2008 at The Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center in Wilmington, after a courageous battle with cancer. His family drew much strength from the dignity he exemplified throughout his illness.

He was born in Greenville, NC on May 3, 1922, the son of the late Berry George Abeyounis, Sr. and Bessie Essey Abeyounis. He was preceded in death by his brother, Morris Lee Abeyounis.

Surviving are his devoted wife of 60 years, Phyllis H. Abeyounis, of the home; two daughters, Kay Davis and husband Allen, of Wilmington, NC; Jane Hollembeak and husband Robert, of Harrisonburg, VA; and a son, Morris Abeyounis and wife Sandra, of Wilmington, NC. In addition, he is survived by two grandsons, Matthew Hollembeak of Harrisonburg, VA and Bryan Abeyounis of Wilmington, NC; two sisters, Pauline Burkett of Wilmington, NC, formerly of Potomac, MD; and Eugenia Piggott of N. Attleboro, MA, as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.

George was a World War II veteran who served in the US Army combat engineers in Europe. In 1946, upon his father's death, George operated the Abeyounis Clothing Store, founded by Berry George Abeyounis, Sr. in Belhaven, NC. Moving his family to Wilmington in 1954, he opened Abeyounis Men Shop. During the early 1960's, he was choir director at St. Mary Catholic Church. He retired from a career as an accountant with the firm of William E. Brock, CPA in the mid-80s.

The family would like to thank the many staff members at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Cypress Pointe Rehabilitation and Health Care Centre, and Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center who provided loving care and attention to George during his illness.

The family will receive friends from 7-8pm Monday, November 10, 2008 at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 11, 2008 in Oleander Memorial Gardens by Monsignor Matthew Hendrick.
