Newton, farmer, widower, was born in West Virginia. He was the son of Benoni Powers. His mother's last name was McCauley, and they were also born in West Virginia. Further information from Michael Gould states that Newton served with the Confederacy in the Civil War. After the war he lived in Clay Co., Missouri and married Minerva Arbuckle in 1875. Minerva died in 1907.
