Dr. John L. O'Brian, 87, of 2020 Jackson St., passed away after a long illness at 1:05 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009, at his home with his loving wife, Eleanor, by his side.

John was born Sept. 10, 1922, in Wilkes-Barre, a son of the late Jaell and Muriel (Thomas) O'Brian. In 1946, John married the former Jeanne Becker, who preceded him in death. He then married the former Eleanor Grabowski, who survives.

He was a 1940 graduate of Elmer P. Myers High School, Wilkes-Barre. Following graduation from high school, he was employed as a machinist for Roller Smith Co., of Bethlehem.

In 1942, John enlisted in the Navy in the Ship Repair Unit. He served in the Pacific Theater and was honorably discharged in 1946.

In 1949, he was employed as a teacher in the York School District. In 1955, John was elected director of the Lewistown School District Vocational Department. He continued in this position until 1962, when he was elected associate professor of education in the Graduate School of Education at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. While at Rutgers, he authored the text, "Preparing to Teach the Disadvantaged." During this time, he also attended Notre Dame University, South Bend, Ind., and Pennsylvania State University, State College, and in 1962, John earned his doctorate from Penn State in educational administration.

In 1967, Dr. O'Brian was elected director of the SUN Area Vocational-Technical School. His first responsibility was to find a site for the proposed new school for the six participating school districts. The school was built in New Berlin. He held this position until 1981, when he retired due to health problems.

He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Hope Church, Coal Township.

In addition to his loving wife, Eleanor, he is survived by several nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by one brother, Robert O'Brian, and one sister, Dorothy Gould.

A visitation will be held from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Hope Church, First and Chestnut streets, Coal Township, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 with Father Adrian Gallagher as celebrant.

Interment will follow Mass in All Saints Cemetery, Elysburg.
